Through the Eyes of A Lumbee Indian...
Being ¼ Lumbee Indian, I have witnessed how truly unfair it is that the Lumbee Indians are not benefited. My grandmother is seventy-two years old and a full Lumbee Native American. She has yet to receive any type of repercussion for the struggles she faced growing up.
When asked about growing up and her thoughts on Lumbee’s not receiving benefits, she states, "Times were tough growing up. When I was a very young girl I had to miss two months of school just to work. I had to pick cotton and tobacco in order for the family to make some money. I moved to Charlotte when I was 17, which was a huge adjustment. However, I was lucky because moved away from the hard times … I think it’s a sin to treat people of America, which were in America before anyone else, like the lowest class of people. They have more heart and soul than anyone I’ve ever met.” Personally, I hope changes do occur because I would love to see each Lumbee Indian receive what they ultimately deserve.
