Reflection...
I've learned more than expected while creating this whole Content Knowledge Project. Being 1/4 Lumbee Indian, I felt that I would not learn new material since I have grown up hearing the history. However, I was completely wrong. I learned more information about the history, economic and political perspective. I learned more about the historical part of the Lumbee Indians and the Lost Colony. I did not know the full extent of this part of their history. I had no idea that the Lost Colony carved CROATOAN on a tree, which I thought was extremely interesting. My favorite new interesting fact that I learned more detail about was the KKK and the Lumbee Indians. I absolutely love learning about the strength and courage the Lumbee Indians had to fight off and scare away the legendary KKK. In my eyes, it is definitely something that makes me proud to say, "I am a Lumbee Indian." This topic regarding Lumbee Indians can be categorized in 3rd grade Social Studies: 3.H.1 – Understand how events, individuals and ideas have influenced the history of local and regional communities, 3.C&G.2 – Understand how citizens participate in their communities, and 3.C.1 – Understand how diverse cultures are visible in local and regional communities (NC Essential Standards, 2011). I would love to incorporate this topic into my future classroom because of how inspiring it is to read. It is great for students to learn about a community that stands together and never gives up. It can show how they should act in their own classroom community, so I feel that it is great to tie in with the students. Learning this information can become so beneficial for them in so many ways. I want to open their eyes to a tribe that is not well-known, yet does not let fear, struggles, or negativity get in their way. I cannot wait to share all of this information to my future students. I truly believe it will be an eye-opening experience.
